Email: teacker@redemptioncdc.org BACKGROUNDIn the academic school year of 2005-2006 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita challenged Texas schools to accommodate more than 21,000 new students into Texas schools. An informal poll of evacuees conducted by USA Today and the American Red Cross found that 39% of the respondents said that they definitely or probably would not return to their homes.  The task still remains to meet the needs of these students so that their lives can return to normal.STAKEHOLDERSStudents and their families have vested interest in the success of each student.  Local Schools and communities have worked tirelessly to accommodate the needs of displaced children.PARTNERSHIPThe parents and caretakers of these students need even stronger partnerships with key stakeholders.

STUDENT AND PARENT ADVOCACY TEAM

Students and families must be fully informed of their legal rights within the education system.  These rights include the rights of special needs students; an equal opportunity to perform at high academic levels; preventing student placement relocation at high poverty schools plagued by failure.  In cooperation with students and parents the T.E.A.C.K.R  Advocacy Team is available to help.GOALS OF TEACKRThe goal of T.E.A.C.K.R. is to help displaced children of hurricanes Katrina and Rita catastrophes transition into the Houston education system by addressing legal issues such as Section 504, Disability Act, Parents Rights. Specifically, T.E.A.C.K.R. will help students and their families in targeted areas to overcome cycles of poverty, through advocacy in an education environment. OBJECTIVES OF TEACKRThe objectives of T.E.A.C.K.R. are to ensure proper placement and retention of students, which ensures their success in receiving passing grades and statewide assessments.CLOSING THE GAPT.E.A.C.K.R .is a program that will work closely with schools and communities in supporting the needs of children enrolled by promoting conservation, enrichment, redevelopment and revitalization of our communities.PARENT’S RIGHTSParent includes a person standing in parental relationship.  For purposes of making education decisions for a student, parent does not include a person to whom the parent-child relationship has been terminated or not entitled to possess of or access to a child under a court order, among other things.RIGHTS CONCERNING ACADEMIC PROGRAMSAccess to the school principal or designated administrator with the authority to reassign a student to a class, request a change in the class or teacher.ACCESS TO STUDENT RECORDSTeacher and counselor evaluationsReports of behavior patternsGradesTests scores.
